Celebrating New Year's Eve in Bali with family can be a magical experience, especially when you choose the serene and scenic Manggis area as your getaway. Our family of five recently spent an unforgettable week in Manggis, Indonesia, just 4 kilometers from Candi Dasa. Far from the bustling tourist spots, we found solace in a beautiful AirBNB nestled right by the ocean. Here’s a glimpse into our adventure and some tips to help you plan your perfect family trip to Bali.
Our Private Retreat on Our Family Trip to Bali
Staying in an AirBNB on the ocean provided the perfect escape from the New Year’s Eve crowds. Villa Nilaya hosted by Anna offered stunning ocean views, and the tranquility was just what we needed. Here’s what made our stay memorable:
1. Spectacular Ocean Views
Our AirBNB offered breathtaking views of the ocean right from our windows. Waking up to the sound of waves and seeing the sunrise over the water was a magical way to start each day. The villa's location provided a peaceful and picturesque backdrop for our holiday.
2. Private Infinity Pool
One of the best features of our villa was the private infinity pool. We spent countless hours swimming and lounging by the pool, enjoying the uninterrupted views of the ocean. It was the perfect spot for family fun and relaxation.
3. Access to Pristine Snorkeling Spots
Directly from the beach in front of our villa, we explored vibrant coral reefs and a variety of marine life. The clear waters around Manggis offered some of the best snorkeling experiences we’ve had, with colorful fish and beautiful underwater scenery. Our five-year-old mastered snorkeling in just a few days.
4. Luxurious Daily Massages
Adding to our relaxation, we indulged in daily massages right in our villa. The soothing sounds of the ocean combined with expert massage techniques made for a deeply rejuvenating experience. This was a highlight for everyone in our family and added a touch of luxury to our stay.
5. Unique Outdoor Showers
Our villa’s outdoor showers were not just a way to freshen up—they became a delightful part of our daily routine, especially when a little frog decided to join us. Showering under the open sky with a friendly amphibian companion was an unexpected and charming surprise!
6. Proximity to Local Attractions
The villa’s location was ideal for exploring nearby attractions. We visited the iconic Lempuyang Temple, known for its "Gates of Heaven" and stunning vistas. We also checked out the black sand beaches, which, despite some litter, offered a unique walking experience. Along the way, we stopped to try civet coffee, a quirky yet fun item to tick off our list.
Exploring Manggis and Beyond
We didn’t just stay in our villa; we ventured out to explore the local attractions and experiences around Manggis. Here’s what we did:
Lempuyang Temple Visit: Known for its iconic “Gates of Heaven,” Lempuyang Temple offered breathtaking views and a cultural experience. We recommend visiting early to avoid the crowds.

Civet Coffee Experience: We made a stop to try the famous civet coffee. While we didn’t have strong opinions about the taste, it was fun to check this unique experience off our list.
Hiring a Private Tour: To make our exploration easy and stress-free, we hired a private tour for a day. This allowed us to avoid the crowds and enjoy a personalized itinerary.
Private Custom Tour in Bali: Tailor your day with a private guide and exploreBali at your own pace.
Snorkeling Adventure: The clear waters around Manggis are perfect for snorkeling. This was one of the highlights of our trip, offering a colorful and immersive underwater experience.

Tips for a Smooth Family Trip
Traveling with family, especially with kids, requires a bit of planning and preparation. Here are some tips based on our experience:
Food Safety: Bali belly is real! Unfortunately, 3 out of 5 of us experienced it. Stick to well-cooked foods, fruit washed with filtered water, fully cooked meats and eggs, and avoid tap water. Consider bringing along some probiotics and rehydration salts just in case.
Stay Hydrated: The tropical climate can be quite hot and humid. Keep water bottles handy and stay hydrated, especially when out exploring.
Plan Your Activities: Manggis is relatively quiet, which is perfect for relaxation, but plan your activities ahead to make the most of your trip.
Pack Essentials: Don’t forget sunscreen, insect repellent, and comfortable walking shoes for your temple visits and beach days.
Final Thoughts
Our family vacation in Manggis was a wonderful mix of relaxation and adventure. The serene setting, combined with the rich cultural experiences, made it a memorable family trip. Whether you’re looking to unwind by the ocean or explore Bali’s hidden gems, Manggis offers a perfect balance away from the crowds.
